It isn't the smallest, slimmest or lightest of the devices being compared here, with all three of those crowns go to the Samsung Galaxy A5 that measures 139.3 x 69.7 x 6.7mm and weighs 123g, also featuring a metal build, but it isn't the largest or heaviest either. It features a premium metal build and offers a flat rear as opposed to a curved rear like the HTC One M7, One M8 and One M9. The HTC One A9 measures 145.8 x 70.8 x 7.3mm and weighs 143g. The A5’s biggest problem is its lower-priced competition, including the Motorola Moto G, which has similar specifications and a smoother software experience while costing over £100 less.SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT HTC One A9 vs Nexus 5X, Moto X Play, OnePlus 2, Galaxy A5, Xperia M5: Design It looks and feels like a premium smartphone, which most mid-range handsets do not. It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of current flagship smartphones, but is thin, light and has enough processing power to get most jobs done without issue. The Galaxy A5 is a solid, perfectly usable and attractive mid-range smartphone, which is unusual for Samsung, which has a habit of making its lower-priced smartphones frustrating to use. The Galaxy A5 costs £349 direct from Samsung, but is available for £280 without a mobile phone contract from retailers in black, white, silver and gold. Third-party camera apps do not suffer from this problem. The camera is easy to use and responsive, but its post processing can often leave something to be desired, with over-sharpened edges often destroying close-up detail in good photos. Images in decent light are good, and details are solid in low-light. It is considerably better than the 5-megapixel camera on the Motorola Moto G 2014, however. The Galaxy A5’s 13-megapixel camerais a capable camera for a mid-range smartphone, but can’t compete with high-end models. The 13-megapixel camera is capable of solid shots, but the default camera app can be overzealous in post processing, reducing details in good light. At 123g it’s also quite light for a 5in smartphone – for comparison the iPhone 6 weighs 129g, the Galaxy S6 138g and the Motorola Moto G 2015 with 4G 155g. The metal frame, glass front and smooth – almost silky – plastic back feel sturdy, without give or flex anywhere on the body. It is 6.7mm thin, which is 0.2mm thinner than an iPhone 6 and thinner than most Android and Windows Phones. ![]() The A5 is one of the best built Samsung smartphones yet. A little bit of paint chipped off one of the doors while using a Sim ejection tool. The sides are chamfered metal, while two slide-out trays hold the microSD card and nano Sim card.
